Future Council (81 minutes)
Release date: 11/08/2023
Director Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film and 2040)
In the present circumstances for the planet and humanity it seems increasingly difficult to feel positive about the future. Fraught with famine, fire, floods and friction, the human race seems hell-bent on a path to self -destruction. Enter Damon Gameau who has grabbed the bus, if not the bull, by the horns demonstrating that there is hope for the years ahead if, politicians, business and communities (globally) prioritise the preservation and restoration of nature.
In this documentary film Damon Gameau (busdriver/director) takes a biofuel bus (Bumblebee) and 8 children (age 9 – 16) traveling across Europe to visit both organisations causing environmental harm and those showing that real change is possible. The film starts and frequently returns to the forest where the viewer will be reminded of the beauty of nature and the importance of connection with each other. The central topic of climate change and environmental degradation does conjure feelings of despair and anxiety among the group, but there are many beautiful moments in this film where the children experience fun, laughter, friendship and wonder at discoveries in nature.
The children appearing in the film were selected from over 1000 applicants. Each child chosen for the film is very well informed and articulate about the climate and environment issues we all face today. It’s strikingly clear to each of the children that we need to embark on a rapid and radical change of direction. As the trip rolls along the viewer gets to know more about each child as they reveal their individuality, special interest and wisdom beyond their years. You will warm to each one of them guaranteed!
Along the road trip, the children had meetings with influential business leaders of large polluting organisations who listened and gave them the opportunity to put their concerns forward. In such a heartfelt, straightforward way they were able confront these leaders with hard hitting questions and requests that they do better for the planet. It’s a reminder of how important it is to be fearless in our endeavours to bring the powerful to account.
The children also had the opportunity to visit a couple of organisations that ensured Nature was at the forefront of their business model. These visits provided a counterbalance to the doom and gloom of trying to deal with the less motivated organisations and showed the children that there are better ways to do business.
Australian film maker, Gameau has emerged as a talented director of documentaries which address issues of concern in the contemporary world, as evidenced by ‘That Sugar Film’ (2014) and 2040 (2019), and ‘Future Council’ adds to this impressive catalogue. This film effectively highlights, in a moving and engaging way, how climate change and environmental degradation are affecting our children’s present and risking their future, but it also fosters hope by showing that positive change can happen – 5 stars!
